The brief

Board Culture is a surf, skateboard and bodyboard shop in the heart of Mermaid Beach on the Gold Coast. The team at Board Culture chose i4U to create an online shopping cart for their live business. It was important for the website and shopping cart to portray the unique style of the offline store.

The surf and skate industry has is synonymous with youth culture and Board Culture decided to seize the opportunity to target fashion conscience surfers and skaters. The client wanted an edgy design that reflected some of their high-end, boutique surf and skate wear. The end result was a design inspired by fashion and trendy surf/skate magazines combined with the rough and thrilling sports associated with them.

I decided to utilize a grayscale palette with the highlight of red. I used grayscale images in the header banner to make sure they did not detract from the main focus of the website – to sell product. The product images were kept in colour to draw the viewer’s eye. A halftone pattern, angles, background and barcodes helped ‘rough up’ the design whilst the lack of colour helped keep the design clean and hint sophistication.
