The brief

Fluffy is a Sunday night event held at the Family Nightclub in Brisbane. Their new monthly artwork series is themed around star signs. The requirements were to have consistent elements running through the entire series but each month’s artwork was to reflect the relevant star sign. Another requirement was to set up a template for the text layout so the Family’s in-house design team could update and add text without having to consult me.

Before tackling the artwork I researched colours, themes and elements that should be present in each design. I saw a natural progression from star signs to astrology, fortune telling and tarot cards. Here I found the inspiration for my designs.

I based the background, text and elements on a tarot card and then proceeded with the character artwork. For this series we wanted to give each character more human qualities and make the artwork more realistic. I sourced a number of photos before creating the vector artwork. For Aquarius, the water bearer, I chose a blue colour scheme and used the character Giselle. Typically the ‘water bearer’ is a woman so Giselle was a natural choice for the role.
