The brief

Fluffy, the Sunday night event held at the Family Nightclub, has a new monthly artwork series themed around star signs. The requirements were to have consistent elements running through the series, but also each month’s artwork was to reflect the relevant star sign.

I did a lot of research before tackling the artwork, finding out which colours, themes, element and traits should be evident in each particular design. Through my brainstorming I saw a natural progression from star signs, astrology to fortune telling and tarot cards. Here I found the inspiration for my designs.

I based the background, text and elements on a tarot card and then proceeded with the character artwork. For this series we wanted to give each character more human qualities and make the artwork more realistic. I sourced a number of photos before creating the vector artwork. With Taurus, the bull, I selected a red/brown palette and used the character Razor. Razor is rough, sleazy with slick black hair and a Latino look. This made him a great choice for the ‘Bull’ character. With the addition of bull horns and a nose ring the transformation from Razor to Taurus was complete.
